Technetium-99m (T1/2= 6 h; gamma = 140 keV) and Rhenium-188 (T1/2= 17 h; ß- = 2.1 MeV; g = 155 keV) are amongst the most important and interesting radionuclides in diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmacy and nuclear medicine, due to their suitable physical decay properties and their availability in a hospital environment.
One task of our group
is the development of novel, organometallic precursors and complexes of
technetium and rhenium for the radio-labeling of biomolecules. We are functionalizing,
optimizing and radiolabeling biomolecules (e.g. carbohydrates, vitamins,
nucleoside analogues) for potential use in radiopharmacy. These bioorganometallic
compounds are studied for their chemical as well as the biological (in vitro)
characteristics. The most promising candidates will by finally applied in
preclinical studies.
Finally, the development of novel processes for the production of radioisotopes,
such as 67Cu and Tc-99m at the PSI is also embedded in your group.
